Best Beach Clubs in Puerto Vallarta

Best Beach Clubs in Puerto Vallarta

Casa Yvonneka is consistently a top-rated luxury rentals Puerto Vallarta on Trip Advisor because of the many amenities enjoyed by our guests, including our sparkling, heated infinity pool with its beautiful view of Banderas Bay. However, sometimes our guests want to explore the beautiful beaches in our area, and our luxury vacation villa is within easy walking distance to the best beach clubs in Puerto Vallarta.

Mantamar Beach Club

On the south side of Los Muertos Beach, this popular beach club features an infinity pool, beach loungers, umbrellas, changing rooms with lockers and a beach-chic restaurant with a menu designed by Chef Thierry Blouet of the famed Café des Artistes.

Swell

For a more casual beach club on Los Muertos Beach, Swell is a great option with loungers and umbrellas on the beach and a cool castaway vibe. Tip: We love their “big salads” from the lunch menu.

Sapphire Ocean Club

A beach club which also offers a gourmet dining experience and a pool, Sapphire offers free Wi-Fi and mobile charging stations to keep you connected, loungers and umbrellas, and courtesy “aqua frescas”.

A fabulous location is just one of the reasons that Casa Yvonneka guests return again and again, for perfect Puerto Vallarta vacations.

The Sandcastles of Puerto Vallarta

The Sandcastles of Puerto Vallarta

One of the many reasons Casa Yvonneka is a top-rated luxury Puerto Vallarta vacation rentals on Trip Advisor is for our easy, walkable access to the best attractions in Puerto Vallarta, including the famous Malecon.  The Malecon is truly the heart of Puerto Vallarta, where you will find public art and live performances that will make your holiday photos and videos fantastic, including the iconic bronze sculptures by various famous Mexican artists that line the walkway. But not all the sculptures are cast of bronze, in fact, some of the most impressive sculptures on the Puerto Vallarta Malecon are much humbler in material but just as beautifully crafted – the Puerto Vallarta sandcastles.

Local sand artists spend days and weeks creating these incredible works of art for the public to enjoy. Their creations are often inspired by the history and culture of Puerto Vallarta and the natural beauty found in our region. Their mastery of the medium is amazing, with sculptures reaching heights and widths larger than your average automobile.

When you visit the Malecon sandcastles during your Puerto Vallarta vacation, be sure to leave a small donation in the marked boxes for the artists, particularly if you are taking photos, as contributions to allow them to continue their public art projects.

Vallarta Vacation: Drag Anyone?

Drag in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has long offered drag shows with men dressing and entertaining as women. We even have an annual event in Puerto Vallarta where straight men don women’s clothing, makeup, and high heels to raise money for the local women’s shelter.

When we originally arrived in Puerto Vallarta, drag shows were relegated to the Amapas neighborhood, the southwest side of the Romantic Zone, and people flocked from afar to attend these fun and raucous shows. Today, we can see these shows in more localized venues and they are attended by everyone. Drag shows have gained respectability with entertainers who display amazing talent, much of it imported from Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles.

Legend has it that role reversal in Mexico is ancient and until the conquistadors arrived it was considered normal and acceptable. Different tribes had diverse customs but for the most part, the indigenous had no problem with men dressing as women and vice versa. Some males took on the role of lady of the house, dressing the part and doing female related chores. It wasn’t until Catholic Europeans arrived that this lifestyle was considered odd in any way.

Many places in Mexico in modern times still believe the being of two spirits embodied in one person is welcome. Known as muxe, it is not unusual for them to marry, have children and remain a part of their community with equal respect. In fact, a muxe can be a shaman in some indigenous areas and they are highly revered. Muxes are seen as a third gender, neither male or female, or both.

Tolerance for homosexuality in Mexico has often followed the actions of whatever politician is in control and at times it hasn’t been easy for gay people. In the famous incident of 41 at the turn of last century, a cross-dressing party was raided by police in Mexico City and everyone was hauled to jail for the exception of one person. This is a story worthy of exploration and relevance, since the actual number of attendees was 42, one being the nephew of then President Porfirio Díaz, who had him whisked away while the rest of the party-goers suffered public humiliation and inscription into the Mexican army.

It is a fact that Mexico has been much more tolerant of homosexuality than their northern neighbor.  Mexico was ahead of the United States in AIDS research and accommodations. Mexico legalized same-sex marriage in 2009, whereas it took until 2015 in the United States.

Vallarta Vacation: Keepin Things Clean

Wash Your Hands

We can’t be reminded enough of this simple deterrent to the flu and other illnesses, which assault Puerto Vallarta at the same rate as the remainder of the world outside paradise. The initial recommendation is to get an annual flu shot. The more people get vaccinated, the more are protected and create herd immunity. This year, winter 2017 -2018, it is suggested to not use the nasal spray application (live attenuated influenza vaccine or LAIV), which is often used for children. Injectable shots are more effective, painless, and available in Puerto Vallarta. There are different strains for age, pregnant women and adults. Standard flu shots are the most common; high-dose for older people and those made with adjuvant, also for older people. Since there are constantly changing viruses, annual shots are highly advised. This year we are protected from three to four circulating flues on this continent, depending on whether we have received the quadrivalent or trivalent.

For those planning to travel to or from Puerto Vallarta, consider it takes approximately two weeks for the antibodies to do their job, so plan accordingly. Even though October is the primary month to get vaccinated against the flu, it will be beneficial to protect yourself all through the season. It’s never too late. Flu season can last as late as May. There are never super accurate statistics on flu due to the fact that only the sickest are hospitalized or see a doctor, whereas most of us simply slog through it until we feel better. According to the CDC, flu vaccinations are not perfect but they are the best tool for protection against illness. The only complete prevention is living in a bubble and they usually don’t do so well at the beach.

Preventative measures include washing your hands, keeping your hands away from your face and staying away from people who are ill.

If you get sick, stay home; don’t expose others. Cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze, using disposable tissue. Pre and probiotics are highly recommended on a daily basis to shore up the immune system; drinking a lot of water is essential. Your body weight divided by two is the suggested minimum amount of ounces. Keeping yourself hydrated is the best advice under any circumstance and when in elevated temperatures, make sure you have a vessel with you at all times. No, gin and beer don’t count.

If you are traveling, consult with your insurance carrier to make sure you will be covered in Puerto Vallarta. It is amazing how many people we meet who are here on extended stays and haven’t thought of this. Hospitals and doctors in Puerto Vallarta are certainly very reasonable compared to their counterparts to the north but any serious illness will set you back, regardless, especially if you must be hospitalized.

Que es cómo es.

Vallarta Vacation: Paddle Boarding

Vallarta Vacation: Paddle Boarding

Stand Up and Paddle

Our first introduction to standing on a surf board with a paddle was a wet one. It took several attempts to learn our balance points but the landing was always soft and forgiving. Stand Up Paddle, known as SUP, has become increasingly popular in Puerto Vallarta over the past few years. SUP is an all-ages sport. Competitions are regular and entertaining, up and down the coastline, with Sayulita hosting a variety of annual events.

SUP might be new in Puerto Vallarta but to surfers, it’s been around for a long while. Hawaiian surfers called it Board Surfing and when the surf wasn’t high, they could still be in the water and move about at will, waiting for a big one to come along. The idea is to place your feet parallel faced toward the head of the board. Using your large back muscles, pull a long stroke, making sure your grasp is a shoulder width apart, otherwise you’ll wear yourself out quickly with short movements. A sesh (session) is the length of time one works out on their board and the goal is to lengthen the seshes on a daily basis in an effort to improve balance, strength, and endurance. It’s an alternative to the gym and we like the outdoor aspect. In Puerto Vallarta, summer is a great time to strengthen skills and lengthen seshes; the water can be a method to cool off in the intense heat and humidity.

Some think Puerto Vallarta’s surf is a little too rough and that may be true for the beginner, though the ocean is unpredictable. We have seen the Bay of Banderas at Beach Los Muertos as smooth as a pond. We’ve found calm waters in the bay at Yelapa, north in Sayulita, and Bucerias, and to the south, off the shores of Las Animas and Quimixto. Mismaloya, with its protected cove is ideal for SUP.  It’s not necessary to schlep your board to these destinations but we do see them often toted onto buses. Boards in zippered cases are a common site in oversized baggage at the airport, as well.

Tours of Stand Up Paddle are very common and it’s nice to have a guide who can teach you the fundamentals. Ask at any beach kiosk in Puerto Vallarta or any of the above mentioned locations and you’re likely to find just what you’re looking for, along with someone knowledgeable and experienced. We recommend SUP as a great relaxing form of exercise; low impact and easy for anyone.

Vallarta Vacation: Iguanas & More Iguanas

Iguanas

Puerto Vallarta is famous for iguanas. It was here that the famous film based on the Tennessee Williams book The Night of the Iguana was filmed. Some people think iguanas were more plentiful during those times but that’s not true. We’ve heard rumors of iguanas disappearing on the Isla Cuale, being eaten my feral cats and street dogs, but that’s not happening either. There actually may be more iguanas in Puerto Vallarta now, due to tourists and ex-pats feeding and protecting them. It’s a fact that construction chases them out of natural habitats but they scurry away once the excavators start and find homes elsewhere, usually very near. Puerto Vallarta is still a jungle. She simply has a city in her middle.

If you see a wild iguana, don’t go after it with a leash, thinking you might have a new pet. They aren’t very domestic and they’ll poop all over your house. If you want to be friendly with them though, just be careful and aware of their needs. They’re not hard to feed; they love mangoes, pineapple and lettuce, but… spinach, Swiss chard and beet greens are hard for them to digest. These greens are excellent for humans so save them for yourselves. They contain oxalates that prevent absorption in the iguana gut by binding with calcium and other trace minerals. So if you’re inclined to share, be cautious to not make them sick.

Though you’re be hard pressed to find it in Puerto Vallarta, Iguana meat is considered somewhat of a delicacy and in places like the Oaxaca coastal area, is common taco meat. Many Mexicans are convinced it will cure the common cold, even if it takes eating iguana for two weeks. They also believe it increases libido. We aren’t sure of either and will stick to chicken and fish, thanks very much.

Though iguanas are herbivores, they also love insects and we have friends in Puerto Vallarta who’ve seen an iguana go after a mouse. Not pretty, but good to know. They have also destroyed many gardens in Puerto Vallarta, so be wary of how easy it is for them to get to such delights as hibiscus, nasturtiums, roses and orchids.

There are plenty of opportunities to take your picture with an iguana in Puerto Vallarta and especially if you venture out to Yelapa, Quimixto and Las Animas. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling this reptile, as you may very likely have exposed yourself to salmonella, a bacteria that is harmless to iguanas but can make us very ill.

Vallarta Vacation: Some People Work From Home (While On Vacation)

Work from Anywhere

You know that photo you see of the person working on the beach, tapping away at his laptop? It’s not a dream. It’s something anyone can do. If you want to move to Puerto Vallarta but you’re stumped about how you’ll make money in the process, there are loads of options. Writers are aware of this; it’s all about deadlines and research, but that’s not for everyone. If you are so inclined, however, there are sites like freelancer.com, which can lead you in the direction of copywriting and if you have SEO skills you will be in higher demand.

If you’re a programmer, you can work just about anywhere and depending on your skill level, there is certainly money to be made. Puerto Vallarta needs people like this, as does any growing city, but this is something you can work at from anywhere in the world, with clients all over the globe. You can also check out Virtual Assistance; though it’s a broad and somewhat diverse subject, we know people who are doing data entry, answering Skype-phone calls and updating websites, and they take their work wherever they go. Translators are always in demand. We’re not talking specifically about Spanish. You can be a translator in any language with your online skills.

Social Marketing is not going away and you can make money with the time you spend in front of sites like Facebook. Find someone to take over their fan pages; Twitter, Instagram and other sites that use social media to get their ideas and brands across. You can live in Puerto Vallarta and be employed by someone in New York, London, Toronto, Milan, Hong Kong, anywhere. It’s a job that doesn’t require a whole lot of tech knowledge and it doesn’t matter where you work from. With the use of templates, the canvass is really quite unlimited. We recommend investing in a short coding course before you come to settle in Puerto Vallarta and you’ll be set for life. We found that learning the basics of web design was a lot easier than we thought.

What’s your area of expertise? You can be a consultant and live in Puerto Vallarta, which the computer age has made very easy. Architecture, law, human resources, art, educational skills, stocks, trading; whatever your skill set. You may already be a consultant and only need to hone your online skills. There’s no reason you can’t work on your tan, while advising clients. The possibilities are endless.

Online teaching is a growing industry. ESL is something you can teach from your home base in Puerto Vallarta. It’s not necessary to be a linguist; online classes will teach you all you need to know. We have a friend in Guadalajara who has been teaching virtually for many years and Puerto Vallarta is her favorite weekend getaway.

Que es cómo es.

At Casa Yvonneka, paradise is found just off a simple cobblestone street. As you enter through a massive iron door, you walk through a stunning tropical garden to enter your own private oasis. Vallarta Vacation: Fly Here For Less

Fly the Cheaper Skies

Everyone thinks there are tricks to fly back and forth between Puerto Vallarta and that other place you hang your hat, without going broke in the meantime.

It’s a fact that Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days to fly to save your dollars and pesos. Peak times are Thursday through Monday, especially given a three day weekend on either side and that’s when the airlines are able to hike the prices up for those who have no scheduling choices. Airlines have certainly hired the best technicians in the world to determine algorithms, hence pricing, which is always based on sales and availability.

Remember the statement about buying your tickets 57 days prior to your flights? It’s a myth. Our research couldn’t even come up with exactly where and when it started but it simply isn’t true. If you are a frequent flyer to and from Puerto Vallarta and familiar with rates on the routes you usually travel and you do see a fare that is obviously the best possible price, grab it! Chances are the seats will be gone within hours; this kind of news doesn’t stay secret.

We belong to mailing lists of the airlines we commonly use. They often send out last-minute specials and they’re usually true blue deals. We also have gotten in the habit of checking Groupon, LivingSocial and other coupon sites.

Be the first one to raise your hand when announcements are made for overbooked flights. Be willing to hang out in an airport and read a good book or people-watch, and you can pick up valuable vouchers. Flying without panic and deadlines for reaching your destinations can be very lucrative. United and Delta even let you bid on how much compensation you’d be willing to give up your seat. United has been known to compensate passengers as much as $10,000; that’s a lot of trips paid for. Let the attendant know before boarding and you can get on a list. There are so many flights in and out of Puerto Vallarta on a daily basis, you won’t need to wait long.

Book your flight directly with the airline. Online booking is always your best option but it costs nothing to speak with a ticket agent on the phone and we have found them to be immensely helpful. Third-party booking is a thing of the past when you’re simply jumping on a flight. If you’re planning a trip with several stops, ground transportation and accommodations, then by all means, use a travel agent; there are good ones in Puerto Vallarta. But for uncomplicated straightforward flights, you’ll find that airlines offer the most flexibility. You can always do your own research on Expedia, Skyscanner or Google Flights so you have a grip on what you’re looking for before you commit.

Vallarta Vacation: Our Top 10 List for 2018

Ten Things You Will Love About Moving to Vallarta

You’ve moved to Puerto Vallarta (or maybe you’re thinking about moving here and want to find out what these ten things are to entice you and motivate you to get with the program). There’s so much to do, you’ll never find enough time for all the enjoyment. Your friends back home think you’re swinging in your hammock, staring up at coconut palms, suffering from extreme boredom… but they couldn’t be more wrong. You’re on permanent vacation but that doesn’t mean you get lazy. True, your relaxation meter is going to be in much better territory but you’ll also have time to do things you’ve always wanted and have leftover time to schmooze with your new friends.

Number One always is time spent soaking up Vitamin D in Puerto Vallarta. It’s a healthier lifestyle for so many reasons; including Two… you’ll be eating better. Fresh fruits and vegetables, grown locally, sans GMO are available for at least one third the price you used to pay. Three, you’re sure to lose weight; the result of the increased amount of walking you’ll do. We take the bus almost every time we head out, simply because we won’t need to worry about parking, traffic, and wear and tear on our vehicle. Four, we guarantee you’ll look younger. We’ve not met one person who’s moved to Puerto Vallarta who hasn’t visibly dropped years, for all the above causes.

Five, you can finally read that list of books you’ve been trying to get to over the years. Whether you’re sitting on the beach, relaxing at home, or turning in for the night, you’re going to have more time to hit those books with bliss and intention. What’s the skill you’ve always wanted to learn? Number Six is taking up the instrument you had planned to play in college but were too busy getting good grades so you could get that great job you have now retired from, and it’s time to fulfill that desire. Chances are you’ll find someone in Puerto Vallarta from whom to take lessons, but if not, YouTube is a wonderful source for learning just about anything; painting, mosaics, crochet, photography, scrapbooking.

Seven , since you’ll be able to afford a housekeeper, you can now grow that garden you’ve dreamed about. Imagine the envy of your visitors when you explain you planted and cultivated those roses, bougainvillea, banana, orange and lime trees!

Eight …You’ve read so many books and now you are ready to write your own. You’ve never had time to tell your story and you know it’s a good one, considering some of the duds you’ve burned through. Join the Writers Club and sharpen your pencils!

Dinners out cost a lot of money up north, especially when you toss in the cost of cocktails, beer and wine but Nine is where you can afford to go out for three meals a day and find lovely little comida corridas on the back streets. The list could go on and

on but let’s end with Ten: the free time to volunteer, golf, sail or hike. Dive, swim and fish. The choices are endless. All you need is to figure out how you will schedule all this happiness!

Vallarta Vacation: Why Dont We Have This At Home?

Let’s Go to the Movies!

We love the movie theaters in Puerto Vallarta! Take into consideration how much we pay for a movie back where most of us come from. Film ticket prices do vary somewhat in Canada and the USA but not by much. An average seat for a first run movie in New York City is going to cost you around $16.00. In Los Angeles it’s about the same. Toronto isn’t much better with the average ticket costing about $15 CDN. How much will you pay to see Star Wars in Puerto Vallarta? The average price is $32 pesos. That’s right around $1.50 USD, depending on the fluctuation of the peso on any given day.

The seats in Puerto Vallarta are comfortable, the popcorn is great and some theaters serve alcohol and full-on meals. The theaters and lobbies are clean, plus the aisles are wide and navigable. Some theaters have recliners (in case the movie is boring you, naps are an option.) In the summer, auditoriums are usually full at all times of day, because they also have air conditioning!

We asked our friends what stands out for them in the theaters in Puerto Vallarta and they came up with interesting and helpful responses. The food gets raves at La Isla and a special shout-out to their friendly and courteous staff. The VIP Theater is considered state-of-the-art and many think their sounds systems superior, but Cinemax at Galerias seems to have the best popcorn in town and their sound system gets high marks, too. We have sadly experienced movies where the volume is turned up so high, we nearly felt our hair blowing; then again, we have also been exposed to the low level of decibels where we have strained to hear actors and missed important dialogue.

Listings for movies in Puerto Vallarta can be found in the local newspapers and are almost always correct. The best way to find listings and times is online and each theater has their own site. If a movie is listed with SUB, that means it’s in English and has Spanish subtitles. If it says DOB, you better speak Spanish. All kid movies are in Spanish and are dubbed.

Movie night in Puerto Vallarta is an inexpensive date with family, children or your significant movie buff partner. The only complaints we picked up in our survey were mainly a couple of small gripes about cheap wine, and not enough ice in drinks, but we’ve suffered much worse than that.

The best thing is the unbeatable price and everyone agrees, it’s one of the bargains that make living here a real treat.
